Optimism: the superpower
One of the favourite books I own is "Why I Am", by John Kirwan. It's a simple, subtle book of thoughtful quotes, each matched with an evocative photograph to convey the essence of the quote. My favourite page in the book is a photo of a lone tree on a hill, paired with the line 'You're different, isn't that great?'.
Through my years I've learned there are many qualities that make me different, and put me on the hill. One of those qualities is Optimism - the belief that it will work out well. I've learned that compared to many other people, from work colleagues to sports teammates to fellow cancer patients, I carry a particularly strong dose of Optimism.
In my experience with cancer, Optimism was very helpful - it led me to trust the people who wanted to help me (medical people, friends, family and strangers), which led to me receiving excellent help from them.
So when I was asked recently in a fun survey: "What's Your Superpower?", I had no hesitation in answering: Relentless Optimism!
